Upstate Therapy Dog’s reading program “We’re All Ears” provides one on one reading opportunities for elementary students in Greenville County. Teachers select the students for the program and the students read to the dogs in an accepting atmosphere. Each student brings books to a quiet location where he or she sits for 30 minutes and reads to the U.T.D. dog and volunteer. Students often feel uncomfortable being removed from class for special instruction. The opposite is true for the students who are chosen to spend time with the dogs. It’s seen as a special privilege. The unconditional love of a dog goes a long way in giving these young students a chance to practice and enjoy reading. Parents and teachers have commented that students have shown a greater interest in reading and even select books that they think the dogs will enjoy.
